Tudor Traders

Based in the 14th Century Manor House, immerse yourselves in this programme. The Tudor Traders is one of our most popular programmes where the children become Tudor sailors, kitchen hands and even noble men at the banquet.

Children having fun in a Tudor Classroom

Tudor Cooking & Pastimes – ½ day

Cook Tudor recipes in the Tudor kitchens using spices from your travels abroad. Once the feast is prepared enjoy some time playing Tudor games and making your own candles.

Tudor Crafts & the Schoolroom – ½ day

Learn about life as a child in the schoolroom. Write with quills, stamp a wax seal on your letter, weave your own piece of cloth, fabricate a leather purse and help make your class pomanders to take home.

Investigation of the Manor and Trade and Travel – ½ day and evening. 

Learn about the history of Hooke Court through a series of questions and practical investigations. Find out about trading in Tudor times. Learn about life as a sailor on board a Tudor galleon and form trading companies, designing your own logo for your boat. Spend the evening making your boat to sail on the Moat. 

Clothing, Drama and Dance – ½ day

Learn all about how the wealthy dressed in Tudor times and try on our own Tudor clothes. Learn Elizabethan Dances or enjoy a drama workshop. Choose two out of the three options.

Tudor Banquet  – evening

Sit down to a formal Tudor Banquet including the presentation of the Boar's Head, the Ceremony of the Salt and discover what's hidden in the Coffyn Pie! Some of the children will be chosen to serve you! Follow this with a Whodunnit Mystery or Elizabethan Dance.

A Tudor 'Whodunnit' Mystery  – evening

Investigate a ‘Whodunnit’ Mystery based around the Tudor history of Hooke Court.

Stained Glass – evening

Learn about the importance of heraldry and design your own family crest. Paint your design onto a transparency to take home.

Tudor Christmas – whole day

If you are visiting us towards Christmas why not experience it Tudor style. Spend the morning learning about Tudor Christmas customs as well as trying your hand at some Tudor cooking and candle making. Whilst in the school room you will make Christmas pockets, a Christmas kissing bough as well as an invitation to the Twelfth Night Feast.

Twelfth Night Feast, Dance and Mummers Play - evening

Experience a true Tudor Christmas Feast by candle light, and finish the evening with Tudor dancing and recreate a traditional Mummers play.
