Using the authentic Ancient History Settlement within Hooke Court grounds as your base, immerse yourself into life as a Saxon, taking time to learn about every day life, arts and crafts.

Cooking – ¼ day

Prepare and cook a simple meal including making sweet adn savoury bread. Make a simple vegetable pottage and cauldron snakes using onions, garlic and herbs to flavour them. Dessert will involve preparing and cooking oat cakes flavoured with honey. Enjoy a Saxon feast!

Weaving & Jewellery– ¼ day

Learn about the process of preparing, dying and spinning wool to weave a piece of fabric. Make your own Saxon necklace to hang a clay pendant.

Saxon Runes & Wattle and Daub – ¼ day

Look at the Saxon Runic form of writing and create your own Runic spell in clay as well as a pendant for your necklace. Build your own Wattle fence enclosure. 'Daub' a wattle hurdle to weatherproof an early Saxon hut.

Saxon Society & Battle – ¼ day

Learn how Saxon society was structured and choose a King, an Earl, a Ceorl and a Thrall to dress in Saxon clothes. Finish the day as a Saxon warrior and join a classic battle formation as you prepare to fight with the help of the Gods.

Saxon Feast – evening

Join the Feast Giver in a decorated Hall by lamplight and let your 'stomachs be filled with delicacies and your minds with song' as you sample the atmosphere of a Saxon feast. Why not finish with a traditional Saxon wedding and saga. 

Saxon Saga and Wedding – evening

Watch as two families are joined together in an authentic wedding ceremony then sit around the open fire and enjoy listening to a story told in the style of a Saxon Saga – be ready for the blood, guts and gore.

Illuminated Writing – evening

Learn about the processess of parchmenting, scripting and illuminating. Try your hand at writing by candlelight with a quill pen as you make your own Saxon Chronicle.
